COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE - OLPALAGILAGI

Currently, Olpalagilagi has a pre-school and primary school. Both teachers and students are enthusiastic, but conditions are challenging with overcrowded classrooms and minimal teaching resources. There is no electricity and no ICT provision. At night, boarding students must sleep on the floor of classrooms.

The Foundation will expand the school to serve pre-K-12 students. It will build classrooms, boarding facilities and ancillary facilities to support this enlarged student body. It will ensure that there is reliable electricity supply, internet connection, and the supplies necessary to operate a connected and thriving school community.

As part of our Phase II, we plan to add adult education facilities to service local parents and community members who wish to continue their education and skill building.

ESSENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE FOR EXPONENTIAL PROGRESS

Water

Half of the world's hospital beds are filled with people suffering from a water-related disease. In developing countries, about 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions. 1 out of every 5 deaths under the age of 5 worldwide is due to a water-related disease. Clean and safe water is essential to healthy living. The Naserian Foundation will bore strategically-located boreholes to serve Olpalagilagi. Beyond the immediate positive health impacts here are numerous secondary benefits to this program including huge time savings, and reduced illness-caused loss of productivity.

Healthcare

Good health is critical for the sustainable development of the family, the community and broader society. A functioning healthcare system produces healthy people capable of participating in economic, social and political development of a country. Healthy children leads to an increase of school enrollment and makes them better able to learn. Better health improves labour productivity as it reduces production losses caused by worker illness.

Education

Getting an education is not just a fundamental human right, it plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of poverty. A quality education increases employment and income opportunities, benefits the individual, the family and the wider community, and is a crucial accelerator towards a gender-equal society. The Naserian Foundation will support the current school system in Olpalagilagi through the construction of new tech-ready buildings, teacher-training and additional support partners.

Access

Access to remote communities can make what would otherwise be simple tasks incredible challenging or even impossible. The Sand River flows through and around Olpalagilagi as it winds across the savannah. It must be crossed to reach the nearest town - Keekorok - and to reach medical help. However, when the waters are high it can be incredibly difficult to cross the torrent. The Naserian Foundation will construct a bridge across the Sand River to ensure Olpalagilagi is never again cut off.

Opportunity
